Health leaders are warning of a “twindemic” with the risk of both COVID-19 and flu circulating at high levels, potentially at the same time.
Local residents over the age of 50 and at-risk groups are now being urged to get flu vaccines and their autumn COVID-19 boosters.
There are now over 80 places across mid and south Essex that residents can visit to get vaccinated including lots of local pharmacies, dedicated vaccination sites and local GP practices.
The public can book winter vaccinations through their GP practice. Alternative options including walk in clinics and ways to book online are available by visiting https://www.midandsouthessex.ics.nhs.uk/health/winter/vaccination/ or call 119.
There is evidence to show that if you get flu and COVID-19 at the same time you are at higher risk of becoming seriously unwell. As this is the first winter since COVID-19 emerged without restrictions in place, the best protection from getting unwell from either is to get vaccinated.
More than 220,000 people living in mid and south Essex have already had their autumn booster in just over a month.
All eligible people are urged to get vaccinated as soon as possible to boost their protection against these viruses.
The double threat of widely circulating flu and COVID-19 this year is a real concern, so it’s crucial that you take up the free flu vaccine as soon as possible if you are offered it. It will help protect you from severe flu this winter and could even save your life.
